A novel that tells the story of its eponymous heroine, Dr Emmeline Hasting, a thirty-three year old geneticist. Over the course of three weeks her life is thrown into turmoil.
On a Sunday afternoon in April, while helping her mother pack up Emmeline's childhood house, Emmeline happens upon a box containing letters and photographs belonging to her late grandmother, Oma. The first photograph that Emmeline sees is a picture of her beloved grandfather wearing the uniform of an SS officer. As she explores the box over the next few weeks she discovers more and more: about her grandparents, about her parents, her uncle and cousin, and most importantly of all about herself.
Should she tell her partner Daniel, who's own grandmother Nonna is a refugee from Nazi Germany and who's grandparents were murdered in the Holocaust? Emmeline also has to make very important decisions about her relationship with Daniel – a marriage proposal, an unwanted pregnancy – all whilst juggling the difficulties of work, including confronting the realities of everyday sexism and prejudice.
Through reminisces and flashbacks we discover Emmeline’s story, from when she was a child until her present, and watch her grow. We also hear the stories of the women whose lives have influenced her own, including her Oma’s and Daniel’s Nonna, both emigres from Germany but who experienced the rise and fall of the Nazis in such very different ways.
